I wouldn't mind assisting Adam with a presentation about Web Standards if he needs help. @Adam: I read your article about blogs as the new resume - I'm sure that would make for an interesting topic.

301 Speed Mentoring - Sara Streeter. A la http://mplayground.blogspot.com/2008/01/speed-mentoring.html Following up on the idea of "getting newbies and mentors in the same room together", five rounds of mentoring lasting 6 minutes each while a few mentees are matched up with a mentor at a time - they each ask their questions for that mentor based on his/her specialty and then rotate to the next mentor for the next round. This is the wiki for NewBCamp 2008, which is being held from 9:00am - 4:00pm on February 23, 2008 in Providence, RI.

NewBCamp is a wrap - your feedback has been great, and I'm looking forward to making the next NewBCamp even more responsive to the needs of the "newbies." It's a delicate balance to strike when putting the geeks and the newbies together - we're all at different levels. So all in all I hope next time we can continue the conversation and help even more people get to their "next level."

Some important info about Parking and Weather for all attendees:

NewBCamp is a GO - NO cancellation

Thank you for your collective good karma, because it's paid off and NewBCamp is happening as scheduled - no delay, and NO cancellation.

The kindly gentleman security officer asked too that I direct you all to park your cars in Johnson Lot at the end away from the entrance, closer to the door of Xavier Academic Building. So when you get there, look for the far fence and park along it - which will be convenient for you and will make sure everyone has plenty of room to park and we don't block anyone out or in. Good enough.

Happy NewBCamp Eve!

Sara Streeter here, giving you all an update on the weather and parking situation (all of which is actually pretty decent).

By the way, we're opening Registration at 9am, but the UnKeynote welcome doesn't start until 9:45, so you have some leeway there.

(Organizers, on the other hand, I'm asking to arrive by 8:30am, and Mr. Pat Dyl and I will be there by 8am, lucky us ;p)

I spoke with the kindly gentleman in Security who will be with us for the event. He has spoken with the grounds crew so they are aware of the need to get Johnson lot clear for tomorrow. As of right now the lot is already plowed and it seems like the storm is clearing up - it has actually turned to light, misty rain in Providence. So I would put my money on having NewBCamp tomorrow (although I am still going to call them tomorrow and send out an e-mail to let you all know for sure - by 6am at the latest).

As for parking, we lucked out and got full use of the parking lot across from Xavier. So for all you who are driving and car-pooling you are welcome to park for the entire day in the Johnson Lot at JWU free of charge. How much better can that get?

Here are the directions to the lot (and again that's 259 Pine Street, Providence, RI 02903, although I noticed recently that the door we'll be using to the Xavier Academic Complex says 261 Pine Street, **shrug**)

From I-95 South:
From I-95 South take Exit 21 (Atwells Avenue). Follow to 5th light then take a left onto Broad Street.
Cross over the bridge and take a right onto Chestnut Street. At the first traffic light, take a right onto Pine Street and the parking lot entrance will be on your left.

From I-95 North:
From I-95 North take Exit 22 (Providence Downtown) and bear right. At light, turn right onto Francis Street. At next light, turn right and bear left onto Sabin Street. At next fork in road (in front of the Dunkin Donuts Center), bear left onto Empire Street. Follow to 5th light and turn right onto Pine Street.
Parking lot entrance is on the left.

I'll go along with that - I said wi-fi is optional to computers only because in some buildings there is a computer at every desk, so it would be feasible to get on the internet - this was not well thought out, however, because computers require student log-ins - so yes, I will check out the wi-fi situation (Sara)

good point there Joe, as of this year they instituted card access only. However, at PodCamp Boston there was security screening people by badges, so we can do the same and have someone at the door to let people in and out. No way around that, that I can see. (Sara)

Someone at the door would be fine. I understand the need for security in the city. I was at a StartupWeekend a couple weeks ago, and it was in a building that required an elevator key. Consequently people were locked out of the building on several occasions bcuz those upstairs ignored their cell phones. Bad!

places for sitting – benches/couches (I would view this as a must)

What’s a NewBCamp?

NewBCamp 2008 is on Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 9am to 4pm in Providence, RI, at Xavier Building on the Johnson & Wales campus, and it is an activity of the SofT ICE (School of Technology Industry Career Explorers) club of JWU. NewBCamp is a BarCamp-like unconference where the participants are invited to give presentations and register beforehand for topics. I am refraining from limiting the topics as much as possible, but what I am hoping for will be a series of tracks. These tracks will be subjects that most presentations will involve, such as Web 2.0, so that participants who come can get a ‘starter kit’ experience that will allow them to give them what they need to continue on their own. I am planning for 200 people. My target audience is JWU students and the public, and specifically people new to technology who do not “speak geek” and want to know how to take advantage of emerging new media and web tools (hence “newbie” in NewBCamp).

Let's schedule a Saturday when everyone can make it to Xavier building and do a run-through. Shake out the bugs and what-not.

It's looking like February 9 will be the Saturday we get to do the dry run through. I'll post more details when I know them for sure.

More to-do's:

1. Itemize little things needed - markers, badges, etc. these have been included in the budget - copies turned out to be a bigger expense than I had planned for - double-sided color copies were a dollar for each at Staples
2. Advertise in JWU sites and campus newsletters RI Small Business Development Center contact has media students who can help
1/30/08 we were featured in the Campus Herald
3. Investigate craigslist advertising
4. Physically go to Xavier building (if this is approved as venue) and check out facilities did this, hopefully the dry run will allow the rest of the organizers to get a sense of it as well
5. Investigate catering possibilities - my thought is Pizza Pie-er, 12 pizzas with three pizzas each of four kinds of toppings, for about $300, then sodas, bottled waters, napkins, etc this was an unrealistic estimate - we're doing box lunches through JWU, cost of $2400 at $8 per lunch
6. Organize "backstage" crew - who will be manning the registration booths, handling Wi-Fi and technical issues, clean-up, go-to assistants

Tomorrow (Saturday Nov. 3) I will be on Skype at 5pm for the first organizational meeting. I'm thinking it will start out as an open chat, and then if we get some serious people we'll turn it into a conference call (or something - I'm still new to Skype so we'll see what happens).

On Tuesday of next week I'm meeting with Sarah Firetto of the students activities board of JWU to talk venue.

On Wednesday of next week I'm meeting with the Dean of the School of Technology et al. to discuss what NewBCamp is and what I'll need (in 10 min or less).

The to-do list

1. Generate a business plan with projected expenses - T-shirts, food, venue insurance - any others?
T-shirts about $2400, based on quote from East Coast Screen Printing
Look into Riverzedge Arts Project in Woonsocket (riverzedgearts.org). They're competitive and a good cause.
I revised my quote down to $1800 based on 300 people attending, if they can beat that I would be interested - Johnson & Wales Student Activities has a purchasing department that we can do T-shirts through

2. Book the venue (we have backing from folks from Johnson & Wales, it's just a matter of figuring out which facility at JWU is the best suited) - meeting on Tuesday - JWU's Xavier building a probability - definite, reserved
- based on venue, figure out the max amount of people who can come 300 people would be the ballpark
3. Contact newspapers about running ads in January (Prov Phoenix, Pro Jo) - forget this - checked it out and ad rates are like $1600 for one time
4. Bring business plan to potential sponsors - first see if JWU will allow for sponsors submitted list of potential sponsors to the Dean yesterday, waiting to hear back
5. Create and maintain ledger of income and expenses - I volunteered to be Treasurer for the JWU club SofT ICE, so I'll be in charge of all the money and if there's a screw-up, it's my fault

These are both closer to the event to-do's
